BODY
-
When you see a physician for psychiatry care, you are seeing a professional that understands the deep connection between physical and mental health. Psychiatrists are uniquely trained in both psychological and medical aspects of diagnosis and treatment. For this reason, they understand the full spectrum of diagnostic and treatment options.
If you have a symptom or condition that a medication may help, there is no specialist with more training in the safe and beneficial use of psychiatric medications than a psychiatrist.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that can help determine if a medical condition is contributing to or causing behavioral health symptoms. Likewise, they can also help with certain functional neurologic disorders.
-
Psychiatrists are medical doctors that have extensive training and expertise in what medications can help mood and behavioral health symptoms, what the risks and benefits are for each psychiatric medication, and whether there are any significant drug-drug interactions with specific medications.
Not everyone needs or wants medication, and Dr. Gilley will work with you to determine whether medication is right for you as part of your individualized treatment plan. In our collaborative approach to care, you always have a say in your treatment.
PERSON
-
Dr. Gilley uses a whole-person approach to your care. She believes that understanding you for more than just a diagnosis is essential for establishing a collaborative therapeutic alliance and optimizing the benefits of any treatment.
To gain a greater sense of who you are as a person, Dr. Gilley makes it a priority to understand your needs, stressors, supports, goals, and values.
There are many aspects in our lives that impact mood and behavior. When tailoring treatment options to an individual patient, Dr. Gilley considers things such as non-psychiatric health conditions and medications, daily activities, family history or genetics, and prior treatment effects and experiences.
She will also ask about nutrition to help determine how best to support your body in healing, or whether any certain foods may be contributing to specific symptoms.
-
Whether you want to focus on counseling and therapy, medications, or a combination of integrative approaches, your care is always individualized.
Therapy can also be integrative, with tools and techniques from various psychotherapy modalities woven together to fit your individual needs and goals.
“I believe that patients should have say in their care. I discuss options with you so we can work together to find the right treatment for your individual needs. Although my practice is therapy focused, I also offer medication options and can discuss in-depth interventional and integrative options with you. You don’t have to wonder if medication-only or therapy-only treatment is your only choice.”
— Whitney Gilley, MD

Our Difference
-
Time is needed to provide quality care for emotional and behavioral health conditions and concerns. Initial appointments are typically around 1.5 to 2 hours—all directly with your doctor. This provides time for a full evaluation, discussion of treatment options, brief counseling about your condition or concern, and the opportunity for questions.
At New Directions Psychiatry PLLC, no appointments are scheduled for less than 30 minutes. Patients have the option for more frequent appointments than available in many clinics. As a psychotherapy-oriented practice, most therapy sessions are 50 minutes, and many patients are seen weekly or every other week.
-
To gain a greater sense of who you are as a person, Dr. Gilley makes it a priority to understand your needs, stressors, supports, goals, and values. To ensure time for a holistic approach to your care, this practice focuses on quality over seeing a large volume of patients.
There are many aspects in our lives that impact mood and behavior. When tailoring treatment options to an individual patient, Dr. Gilley considers things such as non-psychiatric health conditions and medications, nutrition, daily activities, family history or genetics, and prior treatment effects and experiences.
-
Many sites advertise having psychiatry, but then schedule patients with clinicians that are not physicians with psychiatry specialty training. Not everyone who provides behavioral healthcare is a physician specialist, even if they prescribe medication. It can be even harder to know who is treating you with online therapy or virtual medication prescriptions. Whoever you see should always be open about their credentials, even before you book an appointment. At New Directions Psychiatry, PLLC, your appointment is always directly with a physician (MD) specializing in Psychiatry.
To specialize in psychiatry, a doctor receives the same rigorous medical school education all physicians receive to earn an MD. They then undergo years of psychiatry training. This training includes the diagnosis and treatment of emotional and behavioral health concerns and disorders and the use of medications for these conditions. Psychiatrists receive training in psychotherapy and other therapeutic interventions throughout their four-year residency training.
-
Whether you feel comfortable at home or have another quiet, private space you can use for a virtual doctor’s visit, online care brings the specialist to you. No public waiting rooms or long drives to see a psychiatrist.
Because this is a small, patient-focused practice, there is often more flexibility in scheduling including option for more frequent appointments, Saturday appointments and weekly therapy options.
Having a psychiatrist that offers both medication and psychotherapy all in one place can simplify your care. It may also improve the quality of care as your doctor can see a broader, more in-depth picture of your response to treatment.
-
Dr. Gilley works with you to determine what treatments align with your wellness goals. As a physician and psychiatrist, she is trained in a wide range of treatment options, she can counsel you on whether therapy, counseling, medication, integrative options, or a combination of these treatments would best fit your needs. Therapies offered including CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy), Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, integrative and supportive therapy. Dr. Gilley keeps up-to-date on the latest treatments and considers care from a whole-person, holistic approach.

A Pathway to Healing
Our mental health is closely intertwined with our physical health and overall sense of wellbeing. Untreated or undertreated symptoms of depression, anxiety, or the after-effects of trauma can affect our physical health, relationships, and even our day-to-day functioning. But just as important, untreated mental health concerns can impact our ability to fully participate in and enjoy life. It is essential to seek professional help for mental health conditions and concerns.
New Directions Psychiatry PLLC offers high-quality specialty care through convenient online visits, timely appointments, and the option for weekly therapy visits to help you make the most of each step towards healing. When appointments are too spaced out, therapeutic benefits can become quickly diluted. Because this is a small, patient-focused practice, you have the option to be seen at a frequency that maximizes the benefits of individualized care. When you need to talk, you can reach out to your doctor directly.
Step by step, obstacles can become stepping stones on the path to a happier, healthier life.
