Editorial Process
We share our editorial standards for transparency and to be straightforward with our readers.
Editing Standards and Guidelines
The published articles on our site are written by a medical doctor board certified in psychiatry unless otherwise indicated; such as for guest articles written by experts in other specialties or disciplines. All expert content has undergone peer-review by another licensed, board-certified psychiatrist or other licensed specialty physician so that we may present content with authority and objectivity. All articles are read, fact-checked, and edited for clarity, accuracy, and readability. It is our goal to provide information, including translational scientific information, in a way that is accessible and easy to digest so that you can have informed conversations about your health with your medical or mental health professional.
Sometimes, professionals and experts may disagree about specific topics or issues. Generally, consensus perspectives are presented when possible. If it is widely understood that disagreements between experts on a topic are such that there is no significant consensus, our goal is to present either a neutral position, go in-depth on the different perspectives, or take the real-world experiences of our physicians into account. Any opinion provided within these articles represents the culmination of extensive training and real-world clinical experience of a practicing professional in psychiatry. Opinion will not be included for issues outside the scope of the author’s clinical experience, education, or training.
Articles are reviewed from time to time to ensure that the scientific and clinical information provided remains up-to-date. The date an article is most recently updated will be the date at the top of the article. Original publication date, if different, will be included before or after the article.
Reference sources will appear at the bottom of the article. Some references will be scientific papers or professional publications. Resources refer to other sources that are written for a general audience.
